The Boxster is a mid-engine roadster with a design that echoes such classic mid-engine Porsche sports/racing cars as the 550 Spyder and RS60. The Boxster gets its name from a combination of the classic Porsche horizontally opposed six-cylinder “boxer” engine and its roadster body. The Boxster is powered by a 2.7-liter, 217-horsepower engine with a two-stage resonance intake system, VarioCam® variable valve timing and an E-Gas electronic (“drive-by-wire”) throttle. The powerplant can accelerate the Boxster from zero-to-62 mph (zero-to-100 km/h) in 6.6 seconds.
A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and the Porsche Tiptronic S five-speed automatic is available as an option. Light weight combined with a broad torque curve and a roomy, comfortable interior make the Boxster the ideal sportscar for everyday driving. The standard power convertible roof features a cloth headliner for a quiet ride and lowers in just 12 seconds. An aluminum hardtop is optional.
Safety technology in the Boxster includes a patented crumple-zone body structure, inertia-reel three-point seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters, dual front airbags, door-mounted side airbags, and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Boron steel tubing reinforcements inside the windshield header and A-pillars and supplemental safety bars behind the seats help provide protection in rollover accidents. The Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system is also available as an option.
The Boxster gains new seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters, plus interior enhancements and a new optional Bose® digital sound system. The trunk adds an internal anti-entrapment release. The remote entry system now controls seat memory function when the optional power seats are ordered. When the optional onboard computer is ordered, it is accompanied by a new LCD multifunctional display inside the instrument cluster. Interior switches get a matte finish and the keys have a color Porsche Crest®. The exterior color palette adds Black, Carrera White, and Basalt Black Metallic for 2002.
